True Blood Episode 2: “The First Taste”

News

After the cliffhanger ending of Episode 1, True Blood picks off exactly where things left off for Sookie (we’ll keep things spoiler-free this time through). In Episode 2 we learn a bit more about the particular lore of vampires, including their strengths, their Buffy-esque inability to enter a mortal’s house until invited in, and how vampires try to keep these particular foibles hidden from mortal kind. There’s a lot of racial tension in the world between vampires and humans, doubly so in the South where no one gets along on a good day.

trueblood16.jpgWhat I love best so far about True Blood is the inherent weirdness and surreal eccentricities of this fictionalized South, vampires or no; even the opening credits are a testament to the bizarre, full of swampy exteriors, rotting meat and religious zealotry. Everything is sweaty and steamy and sexy. And boy oh boy, is there a lot of sex in this show.

Anna Paquin is the least-Southern actress you could find (Canadian/New Zealender) but she has the nuances down pretty well, especially the sauciness. I could listen to her tell me off all day. Bill is coming into his own as a lovely little old-fashioned vampire suitor, all eccentric and polite and fangy.

I’m definitely digging where the show is going, all full of music, sex and a rapidly evolving mythology. Only two episodes in, and we already have a surprisingly well-developed show full of endless possibility.
