Supernatural 4.5: “Monster Movie”

B-dub

Ben Edlund strikes again! One of my all-time favorite television writers to crafts the funniest, most creative episodes of Supernatural (which he also produces). “Monster Movie” was no different. The clever classic horror movie theme–the whole show was in black and white featuring nostalgic credits and music–cemented the series as one of the most creative on the air right now.

Spoiler-laden reaction after the jump.

Sam and Dean end up in a Pennsylvania town in time for Octoberfest and discover that bodies have been turning up and witnesses are describing the perpetrators as old-school monsters: Dracula, the Wolfman, even the Mummy.

Perplexed, the brothers discover that the real villain is a shape-shifter (gotta love those guys) who’s a big fan of the movies and patterns his killing spree after the classic monsters. He of course eventually succumbs to the forces of good, but not before delivering a surprisingly sentimental monologues about how it’s hard to be a real monster so he went bye-bye to make-believe monster movie land, which is far more glamorous.

It’s a fun episode, not super-invested in the Angel-of-God arc, but a charming diversion. Great lines by Dean as he attempts to re-lose his virginity and a hilarious exchange at the end when Sam guesses what movie his brother would like to live out in real life. Edlund’s written sharper stuff, but I still dig it. The black-and-white was a nice touch and Dracula taking off on a moped was probably the best act break ever.
