Medium has been going in some odd directions lately with these two and three episode story arcs but this week everything returns to normal. This story of the week episode is definitely of the classic episodes of the series. It’s not at the top of the list as far as best episodes of the series, but it’s an entertaining hour of TV.
A bank teller has been trying to convince her boss that she has had a dream that the bank will be robbed. He, of course, doesn’t believe her and just then, the thieves burst through the door demanding money. Allison wakes up and this episode of Medium begins. At the bank, Allison tires to council the woman a bit since she can identify with the woman’s awkward feelings about having her new ability known to everyone. There’s a bit of competitiveness from Allison after the woman discovers the dead body of one of the thieves but not much. Allison is more concerned about the woman’s life because she begins having dreams about the woman that suggest that her life is in danger because she has taken some of the money that the thieves are accused of taking. One of them has already killed the other in search of the missing money.
Allison is having no luck convincing Devalos that the woman doesn’t actually have any special abilities but that she is connected with one of the thieves. She went to a bar to meet the man after he flirted with her in the bank. In the bank, she overhears the planned bank robbery and rather than simply report what really happened she made herself into an image of Allison, a woman she follows in the news and apparently admires. Problems arise when the living thief realizes that the teller has taken the money and he threatens her first with the dead body of his partner.
There are two side stories in this week’s episode. The first involves Joe and the rest of the family learning to cope with his new work situation. He flies to San Diego Tuesday mornings and flies home Thursday nights. So there are three days each week where he can’t be there to help the family get through their days like he once did. He gives Ariel the keys to his car so she can help drive her younger sisters to school and help Allison with whatever errands she might need help with. Of course, Bridgett jumps behind the wheel and wrecks the car. The wreck is minor but what really bothers Joe is that he can’t be home with Allison to deal with it. When he does get home, there’s a rather ominous meeting between Bridgett and Joe. She asks “am I in big trouble?” Joe replies “big trouble”.
The other story focuses on Scanlan becoming a father. As the baby’s arrival approaches, the need for doctor visits and furniture purchases brings it home for him, and he’s scared. Seeing Scanlan act like an ass over and over again because he’s scared of a relationship and then he’s scared of having a baby is starting to get old. How about just showing some real emotion without having it pulled from him like a rotten tooth? Scanlan really needs some other kind of back story than what’s been done with him up to now. Also, when’s he gonna button up that shirt?
This episode is an amusing little light hearted break from the darkness of the past few episodes. It’s funny and even has a sweet little moment right at the end of the episode.
