Vampire_FishNational Geographic Channel is kicking off the summer with a whole new series of Hooked, featuring the most extreme encounters with rare species ranging from a colossal squid weighing in at more than 1,000 pounds, to a stingray almost 12 feet long!

Here’s Ichthyologist, fish tooth, and jaw specialist, Justin Grubich, Ph.D., holding open the mouth of a Payara, also known as the “Vampire Fish.” The Payara earns its “vampire” nickname with a set of two-inch daggers thrusting up from its bottom jaw. (photo credit © Julia Dorn)

If you’ve every reveled in the thrill of the catch, you are going to love this show hook, line and sinker.

Hooked premieres Monday, June 29, 2009, at 10 PM ET/PT on National Geographic.
