I am by no means a fashionista. I can’t tell a Betsy Johnson from a Kmart special, but I love shows about fashionistas! Go figure. Maybe it’s some form of over compensation because I go bah-nanas for Rachel Zoe and I’m in love with MTV’s new series Styl’d.

Styl’d follows five interns who are all vying for 1 job at the Margaret Maldonado Agency.  Senior stylist Jen Rade, who has styled Pink, LL Cool J and Marilyn Manson, is in charge of the intern program and boy does she have her hands full. These interns have a lot to learn.

Tara, Cody, Brett, Janna, GaryThe first episode takes three of the interns out on two different projects. Gary and Janna work with Jen for a fitting with Kim Kardashian.  Jen shoves them both out of the nest, sending them to two fashion PR houses to do a “pull,” which she then edits into a selection that was later presented to Kim at her home. Gary and Janna are real opposites, with him being outgoing to a fault and her being way too timid for the gig. Gary’s tendency to run off at the mouth got him a severe talking to by Jen and I felt bad for him. I’ve been where he is and it’s just his enthusiasm that’s getting out of hand. I couldn’t stand the way Jen spoke to him, though. Like he was an imbecile. Give the guy a little credit, he did pull the best dresses for the job. Janna, on the other hand, showed poor taste in clothes, and knuckled under every time her choices were questioned. I don’t see her lasting long in the biz.

Crazy Brett had to work with senior stylist Julie Weiss and he came in behind the eight-ball since Julie disliked him right off the bat. Desperate to make good, (and desperate for a paycheck) Brett cut his hair and cleaned up his act before showing up for the gig — a photo shoot with a new boy band. Everything went great from there until one of the band members pulled Brett aside and asked for some one-on-one assistance with a red carpet look for the premiere of the movie Fame. Now, here’s where it all went to pieces. Brett wanted the job because, well, it’s money and it’s a job! He asked Julie if he could do it and she said no. More like NO!!!!  She was appalled that he would even ask about doing a job with what she considered to be her client. The odd thing here is she obviously wasn’t interested in styling the boy for the movie premiere. I imagine that’s a little lowbrow for an agency that does shoots for Vogue and GQ. So by saying no to Brett, she was forcing the kid to find help somewhere else and that’s a no win for anyone.

Then Brett made the mistake of all mistakes, he not only took the job anyway, but he pulled items from a local store and put them on Julie’s credit voucher with the agency. Okay, that’s a bone-head move. He figured he’d do the fitting, the singer would buy what he wanted, then the rest would be returned before Julie found out but that’s not how it happened. Janna, who helped Brett pull the clothes and encouraged him to take the job, ratted him out to Julie and she went coolly ballistic. I thought for sure Brett was going to be fired from the program on the spot, but it looks like he’s back next week, so I guess not.

One has to wonder if Janna’s reveal had anything to do with the intern ranking system at MMA. Jen sat the group down after the two shoots and ranked them top to bottom with Tara (who didn’t work on anything) taking the bottom spot, Brett taking the top and Janna coming in a poor third. (There’s a fifth guy whom we haven’t met yet.)

It all ended in perfect “The Hills” style with an intern party. Janna walks in after Brett tells them all how she stabbed him in the back and . . . awkward. . . .  I think Tara said it best when she commented on how much she loves drama, as long as she’s not directly involved.

Me too, girl. Me too.

Watch Styl’d, Sunday nights at 10:00 on MTV.
