It’s been awhile since the first episode of Sty’d aired on MTV but now we’re back and I’m still hooked! Five stylin’ interns are vying for a single job with the famed Margaret Maldonado Agency. Last week, Brett got himself in hot water by taking on a side job then using his bosses name to pull free clothes for the gig. If this wasn’t TV, he would have been fired. But because he’s under contract to MTV, he was given a second chance to redeem himself.
Brett is probably the best stylist in the bunch, the only problem is he has this black cloud following him around. He does create a lot of his own drama because he lives in a Hollywood plastic bubble, but over and above that, he does seem to attract bad news.
After being fired from his job, Brett’s car got booted presumably for non-payment of traffic tickets. He tries to get the car freed, but the DMV says he doesn’t have the right paperwork and so he’s stuck hitching a ride to Jen’s when he’s surprisingly rehired. Yeah!
Jen asks Brett to accompany her to a designer show room but then he has to get the pulls to the job site — oops — no car. Janna, who ratted him out last week, offers him her car so she can win brownie points. As you would expect, Brett is careless and ends up in a fender bender that was totally his fault. He claims to be sorry, but every one of his apologies is tossed off with a goofy smile that makes him look like a narcissistic loser. But he’s a great stylist!
Jen, Brett and the girls were tasked with dressing oddball band Chester French. The lead singer was too sick to show for the fitting and his bandmate was an inappropriate loony tune. Save the diva act for when you’re actually someone people care about buddy. The guy ended up wearing a halter dress over jeans with a Navajo cardigan and this huge silver necklace. Yikes, and they call that styling?
On the other side of the coin we have the sweet and professional Tyler Hilton. His dad is his manager and maybe that’s why Hilton knew how to behave. Julie was running this job to clothe Hilton and his band for a live performance that evening. She had Gary and new guy Cody and things went pretty well over all. Cody was teacher’s pet for most of the gig but he’s likable and has good taste where as Gary has trouble keeping focus. Cody’s problem is going to be that he has the hots for Julie and you know that’s going to backfire.
All went well until the end of the night when Cody and Gary had to collect the items that needed to be returned. Cody thought they were supposed to take Tyler’s belt, but Gary remembered Julie saying that Tyler could keep his whole outfit (one of the perks of having a stylist style you!). To be sure, Cody asked for the belt back. Julie was horrified when she heard about the incident but on screen it didn’t look like a big deal. Tyler was a nice guy, he didn’t seem to care one way or the other so, no harm no foul.
My DVR cut the show off before the final rankings but I venture to say that Brett came out on top, Gary next with the girls, who did nothing in the middle and Cody at the bottom for his faux pas.
Next week, Cody moves in on Julie. Bad, bad idea.

I’ve only seen one episode and I think I’m already hooked – Styl’d is great. While it’s obviously heavily scripted, I find it quite entertaining, and I also think it’s a cool idea for a reality show – the celebrity style industry isn’t really something that gets covered a lot.
Also, really like the music choices they make, especially in last night’s episode when they used the songs “Turn Me On” and “Fire Island” by TV/TV – those are two of my favorite dancey/party tunes of the year so I was amped to hear them on Styl’d.

@darci: Now that you mention it, I did like the music. It really gave the show a fast, uptempo feel that kept things moving. I don’t know why we get pulled into these shows but I’m pulled into this one!
