I don't know whether to take the show to task for sidelining Kirk and the crew for most of the final act or to applaud the show for taking that kind of chance. For such an inconsequential episode, it sure left me with a lot of mixed feelings.

While the episode provides a prime example of Shatner at his worst, it also showcases much of what he rarely gets credit for -- he's capable and strong without being macho, and is even able to play sensitivity without becoming a cloying wuss.

I'm so enamored with the series right now that just the sounds about the Enterprise make me happy. It's a real forest/trees thing happening, meaning I'm enjoying less impressive episodes more than I probably ought to.

The intent of all this is to out myself as a born-again Trekkie. Or Trekker. Whatever. 43 years after it first aired on TV, I've fallen in love with Star Trek. As a result, I've committed to watching every single episode of every single incarnation of Star Trek, from The Original Series to the Scott Bakula-heavy Enterprise.
